Ship recycling & UN SDG

We believe that the ship recycling industry is a notable example of Circular Economy as it conserves the metal resources on the earth by recycling and reusing steel, copper, brass, and aluminum recovered from ships. It generates employment opportunities for skilled workers and supports the development of communities. The United Nations adopted Sustainable Development Goals 2030 (SDG 2030) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 20230.

Sustainable ship recycling aims to achieve multiple SDGs.

End poverty in all its forms everywhere.

The ship recycling industry generates employment opportunities for skilled workers and provides an opportunity to earn rightful wages, which ultimately helps to end poverty at grass-root level.

Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

The ship recycling industry is getting regulated by international and national regulations to enhance workers' safety and the quality of the environment. Training and awareness of workers assists in protecting workers’ own health and support for the families.

Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

The continuous training and regular drills provide access to knowledge and learning opportunities.

Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

Although women’s presence is nearly invisible at recycling yards, women contribute indirectly to ship recycling through sale and purchase activities, accounting and financial services, legal practices, and other multiple functions.

Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

The continuous training and regular drills provide access to knowledge and learning opportunities.

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.

Ship recycling helps to minimize the consumption of resources and energy. The ship recycling is based on the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle principle. The CO2 emissions are reduced by at least four times by extracting the steel from the old ships than producing the steel from raw iron ore.

Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development.

Recycling end-of-life vessels helps to protect oceans, seas, and marine resources. It is imperative to understand that abandoned, or scuttled end-of-life vessels are more harmful to the marine environment.
